672 BC Esarhaddon makes his son Shamash-shum-ukin crown prince of Babylon.

669 BC According to Esarhaddon's will, the Assyrian empire splits. Ashurbanipal, son of Esarhaddon, is the new king of Assyria, and Ashurbanipal's brother, Shamash-shum-ukin, becomes king of Babylon. In theory equal, in practice Ashurbanipal keeps his brother dependent.

652 BC Shamash-shum-ukin's rebellion against his brother begins.

648 BC Shamash-shum-ukin kills himself.
