WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION
1701 - 1714
Charles II was the last monarch of the Spanish Habsburg
family. All hell broke loose when he died childless.
The British, the Dutch, and the French
equally claimed the throne for one of their candidates.
French
Louis XIV was the
lucky winner when after years of fighting his grandson Philip V was crowned king of Spain.
The North American extension of this war
is called Queen Anne's War, or the Second French and
Indian War. Here is more about the
French and Indian Wars.
The Peace
of Utrecht and the peace treaties of Rastatt and Baden ended the war.
