WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION
1701 - 1714

Charles II
was the last monarch of the Spanish Habsburg family. All hell broke loose when he died childless.

The British, the Dutch, and the French equally claimed the throne for one of their candidates.

French Louis XIV was the lucky winner when after years of fighting his grandson Philip V was crowned king of Spain.

The North American extension of this war is called Queen Anne's War, or the Second French and Indian War. Here is more about the French and Indian Wars.

The Peace of Utrecht and the peace treaties of Rastatt and Baden ended the war.

THE BATTLES OF THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION
On August 4, 1704, Britain took control of Gibraltar after Spain surrendered.

The Battle of Oudenaarde was fought on July 11, 1708.
England's general, the Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy, and 80,000 men defeated 85,000 French troops led by Louis-Joseph Duke of Burgundy.

Another battle was the Battle of Malplaquet on September 11, 1709. The British won.
