CHARLES MARTEL
688 - 741

Charles' nickname Martel means hammer. And when in history a guy gets nicknamed The Hammer you have an approximate idea of who was top dog at the time.

Charles ruled Austrasia from 715 - 741. Unofficially, he also ruled Neustria.

Charles was a member of the Carolingian Dynasty. Charles' father was Pepin II of Herstal.

In 732 at the Battle of Tours (also called the Battle of Poitiers) Charles helped Eudes, the duke of Aquitaine, defeat a Muslim invasion.
