CHARLES III THE FAT
839 - 888

Charles III the Fat was a member of the Carolingian family, the great-grandson of Charlemagne, and the son of Louis II the German.

Charles became king of Swabia in 876, king of Italy in 880, and finally emperor in 881.

In 886, Charles had to pay off the Vikings so that they would leave Paris alone. Historians are appalled by this. They say, instead of putting money on the table, Charles should have fought the Vikings.

Charles was overthrown by his nephew, Arnulf. The year? 887.
