PHILIP II
1527 - 1598

Philip II was the king of Spain from 1556 - 1598, which made the Armada failure part of his political headache, and Elizabeth I his opponent.

However, under Philip II, the Spanish Empire reached its biggest extent.

Philip had become king of Spain upon the abdication of Charles V.

In 1580, Philip conquered Portugal and as Philip I, he was therefore also king of Portugal from 1580 - 1598.

When Philip died in 1598, he left a ruined navy and an exhausted kingdom.
