The naval Battle of the Nile was fought in the Abu Qir Bay, which is near Alexandria, Egypt. Hence, the battle is also called the Battle of Aboukir Bay (or Abukir Bay.)

The Battle was part of Napoleon's Egypt Campaign, which in turn was part of the French Revolutionary Wars.

WHO FOUGHT?

The British, led by Horatio Nelson vs. the French, led by Admiral François-Paul Brueys d'Aigailliers.

THE OUTCOME AND CONSEQUENCES

The Brits won this battle. Nelson, hero of the day, was made a baron.

Only four French ships could escape, led by Rear Admiral Pierre Charles de Villeneuve.

Napoleon had to bury his dreams of conquering the East.

Over 200 casualties for the British and over 3,000 casualties for the French.
