BATTLE OF THE TEUTOBURG FOREST
AD 9

In late summer of the year 9 AD, three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus (and Varus himself as well) were wiped out by German tribes at the Teutoburger Forest, or the Teutoburger Wald, how the Germans call it.

The Germans were led by Arminius, also called Herman if you are German, who was chief of the Cherusci people.

Where exactly was the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest fought?

Approx 10 miles north of today's Osnabrück.

The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was a milestone for Germany in her fight against Roman invasion.

Tacitus calls Arminius "unquestionably the liberator of Germany".
