BATTLE OF THE TEUTOBURG FOREST
AD 9

In late summer of the year 9 AD, three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus were wiped out by German tribes at the Teutoburger Forest, or the Teutoburger Wald, how the Germans call it. It was a massacre more than anything else.

The Germans were led by Arminius, also called Herman if you are German, who was chief of the Cherusci tribe.

Where exactly took the battle place?

Approx 10 miles north of today's Osnabrück.

The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was a milestone for Germany in her fight against Roman invasion. In fact, based on this battle, ole Tacitus calls Arminius "unquestionably the liberator of Germany".
