GLASNOST & PERESTROIKA

PRONOUNCE GLASNOST

Glasnost, meaning openness, was a political course of action practiced and promoted in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Gorbachev.

People were now allowed to openly discuss and criticize their government. Also, other countries that used to be enemies of the Soviet Union during the Cold War were now approached differently.


PRONOUNCE PERESTROIKA

Tied together with glasnost was perestroika, which means restructuring. Perestroika describes the many political and economic reforms that followed.
