History Notes - Herod Archelaus

HEROD ARCHELAUS
22 BC - 18 AD

Herod Archelaus was the son of Herod I the Great, who wanted him to become the next king of Judaea upon his death.

Herod the Great died in 4 BC and Archelaus was ready to roll. But Roman emperor Augustus wouldn't let him because the Jews hated Archelaus' guts.

In order to stress Judaea's dependency on Rome, Augustus made Archelaus ethnarch of Judaea, not king. As such, Archelaus ruled Judaea, Samaria, and Idumaea for two years.

In AD 6, the Jews were fed up with Archelaus. The Romans voted for early retirement and exiled Archelaus to Gaul.

And here is a map of Gaul.

HEROD ARCHELAUS' FAMILY
Herod Archelaus' brothers were Herod Antipas and Philip.

His mother was Malthace.
