JACOBITE WAR
1689 - 1691

ABOUT THE NAME
In Latin, James is Jacobus. The Jacobites were supporting the restoration of the exiled king James II to the English throne.

In 1689, William III became king of England instead.

James thought that stunk, packed his knapsack, and crossed over to Ireland to start fighting his way back to the throne.

THE JACOBITE WAR AND THE FRENCH

James was also encouraged by French king Louis XIV, whose plan it was to keep William III busy fighting James II so that he, Louis XIV, could expand his territory on the continent undisturbed.

Let's keep in mind that William was also the ruler of the Netherlands. Louis himself was busy fighting the War of the Grand Alliance.

However, the Jacobites lost the Jacobite War and James escaped to France. James fled to France in 1690 but his followers hung in there a bit longer and kept fighting until 1691.
