BATTLE OF SEDGEMOOR
JULY 16, 1685

The Battle of Sedgemoor was fought on July 16, 1685 according to the new calendar or on July 6, 1685 according to the old calendar.

More about the old style / new style dates.

The fighting took place southeast of Bridgwater, Somerset, England.

James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, and his team fought against the royal army of James II, led by Louis de Durfort, Earl of Feversham, and John Churchill.

Why did they fight?

James Scott was the illegitimate son of Charles II who claimed he was the rightful king of England.

James Scott was a smart tactician but the trouble was, he only had a bunch of untrained men at his disposal. Thus, his team lost the battle of Sedgemoor. His revolt was over.
