CALIPHATE
632 - 1258

A caliphate is the territorial jurisdiction of a caliph, which derives from the Arabic word for successor.

What is a caliph?

A caliph, also spelled calif or khalifah, is the civil and religious leader of a Muslim state who is considered to be a representative of Allah on earth.

After the death of Muhammad the Prophet in 632 AD, the first caliph was Abu Bakr, followed by Umar I, Uthman, and Ali.

Following Ali was Muawiya I, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty, which lasted from 661 - 750.

The time of the Caliphates was over after the Mongols wrecked Baghdad in 1258.
