The Battle of Pharsalus - August 9, 48 BC

Initial Advances

Pompey's Defensive Strategy:

Pompey positioned his forces in a defensive stance, hoping that Caesar’s troops would tire themselves out by advancing across open ground.

Pompey's cavalry was massed on his left flank, intended to overwhelm Caesar’s weaker cavalry.

Pompey also ordered his infantry to hold their ground rather than advance.

Caesar’s Tactical Adaptation:

Caesar arranged his army in a traditional triplex acies (three-line formation) but had secretly formed a fourth line of elite infantry at the rear of his right flank, anticipating Pompey’s cavalry charge.

Caesar’s forces advanced cautiously toward Pompey’s static infantry.
