The Battle of Pharsalus - August 9, 48 BC

Caesar Creates a Fourth Line

Both armies deployed between the Enipeus River and hills to the north.

Pompey's Forces: 45,000 infantry (including elite Cilician, Spanish, and Syrian legions), 7,000 cavalry

Caesar's Forces: 22,000 infantry (including veteran Legions VIII-XII), 1,000 cavalry

Before the battle commenced, Caesar made a strategic decision by forming a fourth line of infantry. He removed one cohort from each of his legions, having thus a fourth line of cohorts of 3-4,000 men, and positioned them diagonally behind his right wing, hidden from Pompey.

This new formation was specifically designed to counteract Pompey's cavalry, which was expected to be a significant threat.
