Francis II was the last Holy Roman emperor. As such he
reigned from 1792 - 1806.
In 1804, and as Francis I, he
declared himself emperor of Austria.
As Francis, he was king of
Hungary from 1792 - 1830.
As Francis, he was king of
Bohemia from 1792 - 1836.
The Family of Francis
II
Francis was a member of the
Habsburg Dynasty.
Francis' grandmother was
Maria Theresa.
Francis' father and predecessor was
Leopold II.
His mother was Maria Luisa of Spain.
Francis' son and successor was
Ferdinand I the Benign.
Austria and France
Leopold died on March 1, 1792.
Francis was 24 years old and inexperienced when he became
emperor. Only seven weeks after his accession, on April 20,
1792, France declared war on Austria.

Francis and Napoleon
Napoleon fought Francis in the Battle of
the Three Emperors, also called the
Battle of Austerlitz, on December 2, 1805, and won.
Napoleon further told Francis what
territories he could and could not have by means of the
Treaty of
Pressburg, signed December 26, 1805, by Austria and France.
Adding insult to injury, Napoleon married
Francis' eldest daughter Marie-Louise in 1810.
