TREATY OF SAN ILDEFONSO, 1800
With this treaty the Spanish signed the Louisiana territory over to France. The US wasn't too tickled about it. In 1803, however, Napoleon decided to sell the whole thing to the States and that deal became known as the Louisiana Purchase.
