JACOB ABBOTT
1803 - 1879 Mr. Jacob Abbott lived in Maine.
He was a teacher and diligent writer.
Jacob wrote many books
for young people. He also wrote 22 history books. Among them:
The History
of Xerxes the Great, of which
you may or may not be able to
purchase an
ancient copy,
and the History of
King Charles the Second of England, which you can
read
online.
Obviously, Abbott's books were penned in the style of his
time. And even though it was possible to get away with having a sentence
running over half the page in the eighteen hundreds, Abbott's
narrative is easy to follow and enjoyable.
Abbott doesn't rush the reader
through the events but rather prepares him for their appearances
first by presenting background information on the person, event, or action that is to follow.
