HENRY ADAMS
1838 - 1918
Henry's great-grandfather and grandfather were both
presidents of the United States.
Henry's father was a diplomat as well. Henry's mother came from a ridiculously wealthy family in Boston. So we can
only imagine the conversations around the dinner table. (Where's daaaaaddy?? Quiet son, and finish your smoked oysters.)
Interestingly, Henry later
wrote
"Power is poison."
Time wise,
Henry felt a wee bit misplaced in history. He loved all things
medieval (T.E. Lawrence
comes to mind.) A Harvard man, Henry became Professor for medieval
history there.
The Education of Henry Adams
was his autobiography for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in
1919. Being already dead in 1919, the Pulitzer was posthumously.
